The Lamm Jewish Library team is proud to announce a new collaboration with Christopher Latham OAM, the Australian War Memorial’s first musical artist-in-residence. He is creating seven large war memorials, working closely with renowned composers like Elena Kats-Chernin AO and ARIA award-winning didgeridoo player William Barton.
LJLA will host this first event in a series of special musical events entitled The Music of Memory. These events will culminate in the Holocaust Memorial performance by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra on October 31, 2024.
ABOUT THE MUSIC OF THERESIENSTADT:
Among the many prisoners of Theresientstadt were talented Czech composers Pavel Haas, Gideon Klein, Hans Krasa, and Viktor Ullmann. Sadly, they were transferred to Auschwitz in October 1944. Haas, Krasa, and Ullmann were killed upon arrival, and Klein died in Fürstengrube subcamp in January 1945.
ABOUT CHRISTOPHER LATHAM OAM:
Christopher Latham OAM, formerly an ACO violinist and festival director, is the Australian War Memorial’s first musical artist-in-residence. He was awarded an honorary Doctorate by the University of Canberra, the Order of Arts and Letters by France, and the Medal of the Order of Australia for his work on music and war. He is creating a Holocaust Memorial to be premiered by the Melbourne Symphony on Oct 31, 2024, to mark 80 years since the start of the liberation of the camps. All his work is made to lighten the burden of trauma, and to help those affected, to heal.
Join us for an intimate lecture-concert honouring the memory and stories of Czech composers like Pavel Haas, Gideon Klein, Hans Krasa, and Viktor Ullmann who were imprisoned at Theresienstadt.
