The Hidden Jewish History of the Ukulele

Ukuleles are fun and easy to play but are they Jewish? You’d be surprised! Come to this highly enjoyable, informative and practical six-week short course led by David Krycer on the history and practice of the ukulele.
Experience fascinating stories of Jewish ukulele players, Holocaust heroes from Hawaii, a globetrotting Jewish/Arab ukulele ensemble and more. Learn to strum and pick out the melodies of Hebrew, Yiddish and Sephardi songs on your ukulele.
Participants (beginners are very welcome) will learn chords, strumming styles, some fingerpicking and other ukulele techniques, tales of Jewish ukulele players from Molly Picon, the 1960s icon Tiny Tim through to modern players like the Hawaiian Jewish princess of the ukulele Brittni Paiva and more.
Bring along a ukulele and a clip on tuner (or even a tuner app on your phone). If you don’t have a ukulele, David will provide a few spare ones. All other materials will be provided.
Please note: depending on COVID restrictions, some or all of these classes may take place online.
Facilitator: David Krycer is a long time music teacher and widely travelled professional performing multi-instrumentalist. He has spent his life performing many types of music such as jazz, rock, blues, French and the klezmer music he is widely known for. In more recent years he has added the enjoyment of teaching the ukulele, both in workshops and privately as well as playing this wonderful instrument in concerts. He enjoys sharing his knowledge and techniques with everyone.
