I am a non-traditional student who has spent numerous years striving for graduation. My journey through university was not the typical one – I returned to school while married and raising children, even leaving my three-month-old behind so that I could graduate sooner and provide for my family. The dream of graduating from Columbia University, my dream school, has been a beacon of hope throughout these challenging times.
However, as a senior who did not participate in any protests and felt in the middle of things all year due to various circumstances, I feel overlooked by the current commencement plans. I understand the need to prioritize safety, but it is also essential that all seniors are recognized equally and given the opportunity to celebrate their achievements on campus. There is no credible reason that Commencement cannot proceed, as if safety is the main concern, then that does not explain how such a concern would be resolved by modifying the class day location to another area.
Therefore, we call upon Columbia University administration to honor seniors properly with an on-campus commencement for both Class Day and the University Commencement Day on May 15th. This would not only recognize our hard work but also fulfill our dreams of walking across that stage at our beloved university. In addition, the Commencement should NOT be led/given by the current President of Columbia (Minouche Shafik), as her actions (and inactions) have directly led to the current circumstances.
The importance of graduation ceremonies cannot be overstated. According to research by Purdue University’s CERIAS (Center for Education Research in Information Assurance and Security), graduation ceremonies significantly impact students’ sense of accomplishment and closure (CERIAS Tech Report 2011-13). Most students graduating this year, the class of 2024, did not receive a high school graduation or an in person freshman year, missing out on quintessential experiences. They rightfully deserve a traditional commencement ceremony, surrounded by the familiar buildings they’ve studied and attended throughout their educational journey.
We urge you to consider this request seriously as it affects many students like me who have worked tirelessly towards this goal amidst personal challenges. Please sign this petition urging Columbia University administration to honor its commitment towards its students by holding an appropriate commencement ceremony on campus.
Sincerely,
Dana Krantz, class of 2024
