Open Letter to the Minister for Local Government of Victoria
Dear The Hon. Melissa Horne MP
We request you to urgently write to Councillors in all local municipalities reminding them of their duties under Schedule 1 of the Local Government Act 2020 which confers on Councillors a positive duty to treat the municipal community and members of the public with fairness, objectivity and respect.
Motions relating to the Middle East conflict which are one sided do not meet these standards. Debate over these types of motions has been distressing to the Jewish community and can only lead to division and victimisation. We are aware the Councillors who have voted against these motions have been harassed and vilified.
We urge you to remind Councillors of their role to provide good governance for the wellbeing of all members of the municipal community, and that their behaviour should meet both legislative standards and the broader multicultural values of Victoria.
