Core values & learning philosophies – How we get there
We have adopted the Early Years Learning Framework as our centre’s learning framework.
Our centre philosophy is based on the following values, drawn from Jewish sources and Montessori philosophy, and the EYLF.
Respect
בְּצֶ֥לֶם אֱלֹהִ֖ים בָּרָ֣א אֹת֑ו
“For in God’s image He created man”- (Bereishit – Genesis 1:27)
We show respect for everyone (children, parents, families, staff) as everyone is created in the divine image.
Jewish Identity
We seek to ignite a spark in each child to lay claim to his Jewish heritage and culture.
Loving kindness
“To love your fellow as yourself” (Vayikra – Leviticus 19:18 )
We go out of our way to help each other and show empathy because these traits are essential to becoming considerate members of society and building healthy social relationships.
Sustainability
We care for the environment and avoid waste wherever possible because we have a responsibility to care for the world (Baal Tashchis).
Individual Approach
חֲנֹ֣ךְ לַ֭נַּעַר עַל־פִּ֣י דַרְכּ֑ו
“Educate a Child according to his way”- ( Mishlei -Proverbs 22:6)
Our approach caters to children’s individual needs, interests and culture because every child is unique and learns in different ways and at different paces.
Child-led Learning
“We discovered that education is not something which the teacher does, but that it is a natural process which develops spontaneously in the human being.” – (Maria Montessori)
We believe in the innate drive of children to understand and experience the world through hands-on expression, trial, error and openness, with children directing their learning while teachers/parents’ guide and support them.
Independence
“The greatest sign of success for a teacher… is to be able to say, ‘The children are now working as if I did not exist’.” – (Maria Montessori)
We support children to take responsibility and develop practical life skills to self-regulate and independently keep their environment in order. We provide opportunities for children to manage appropriate risks to promote resilience and problem solving skills.
