Description
Hello!
Way back in 2002, we found a gap in the healthcare system that never should have existed – who was caring for our Young Carers? With an estimated 1 in 10 young people growing up caring for a family member who has a chronic or mental illness, disability, or an addiction, Young Carers are one of the four most at-risk groups of young people in our community. Since the official launch of Little Dreamers in 2009, we have made it our mission to improve the quality of life for Young Carers. Our programs have been co-design with Young Carers and have been recognised as best practice programs by researchers and experts around the world. We’ve even had a golden tick from Queen Elizabeth II herself.
With five key focus areas: identity; health and wellbeing; social connection; education and employment; and financial literacy, we are a fast-moving, proactive organisation that is driven by our values at the core of everything we do. We’re humble, we’re hungry and we’re kind. Our eight core programs are empowering, innovative and most importantly, incredibly fun.
Little Dreamers eight core support programs for Young Carers aged four to 25 across Australia. These range from one-off, short-term impact programs to longer-term interventions. Alongside our recurrent programs, we have a number of ad hoc projects and events including an annual Young Carers Festival and the 2021 Young Carer Advocacy Project.
Our core programs are:
– Dream Experiences: a one-off support, designed to celebrate and reward Young Carers for all that they do in their family.
– Holiday Programs: provides an opportunity to have some fun on the school holidays, connect with peers, and access respite from their caring role.
– Big Dreamers: a six-month personal development and leadership program empowering Young Carers aged 14-18 outside of their caring role.
– Mentoring, Tutoring, and Case Management: Family Support Workers facilitate referrals out to partner organisations and assist with additional support whilst volunteers provide one-on-one mentoring and tutoring.
– The Dreamers Hub: an online community created for Young Carers with forums, tips and tricks, fact sheets, live webinar sessions, interactive modules, and more.
– The Young Carer Project: a professional development program for teachers across VIC and QLD focussing on increasing identification and support for Young Carers in the classroom.
